So they are forecasting a whopping -5 for tonight here in southern Manitoba. I have never seen it get that cold this time of year here so hopefully they are wrong. It was close to freezing last night already. Does canola in the cotyledon stage have a chance or should I be getting seed already?

If it’s been used to colder temperatures it will fair better. It was -3 here last night for a few hours. We will see how it damaged is in a few days.

It certainly won’t do it any good, we’ve had it frozen at that stage before and had to reseed. A few will survive, but it will take a few days to get a handle on what will come back, then the stuff that does come back seems to struggle for the rest of the year. We have reseeded when others left theirs and ours matured sooner. Hopefully it won’t get that cold. Calling for-3 here, but it’s only 5 degrees right now so I hope it warms up a bit before tonight. Had a layer of ice on a 5 gallon pail of water last night that was 3/4 full, no frost on the grass or vehicles though.

Had 3 days in a row of frost, -2, -4, and -3 It looks ok, not great but it will survive, there is still green growing points on the plant. Some are yellow or purple ish, but still green in the center of the plant. This was on black soil not stubble, seams to help hold the heat better I find, lots of canola on stubble that won’t take I frost as well.

Also depends on if its a dry frost or not. If you have moisture a frost isn't as bad as if you are dry.

I’m wondering if it would be finish after tonight? Of those I would be most concerned about the canola. Soys will take more frost than canola and corn can freeze off and re-grow at that stage. I haven't grown barley in decades but I have some up in rows now, is it wimpy in spring? I heard it was -5 in Saskatoon this morning and -4 in Yorkton, I'm thinking that claimed some canola acres if so...

I can't remember ever having to reseed barley, even a few years ago when most of the prairies had their canola frozen, I think a little later than this even, and our barley was fine.

How many hours of freezing on a particular night/morning is as important as how low the temperature gets. The canola varieties of the last 10 years or so can definitely survive more frost than canola from years back.
I have had to reseed canola once on the lower part of a quarter of land. The higher part was fine. I have more often been surprised at what freezing conditions canola will survive. Like someone here mentioned already, if the previous few days/nights are getting cold already, the plants are becoming acclimatized to the freezing conditions and have a better chance of survival.

Was below freezing here for 6hrs and got to -3. Just finished walking some of our fields now this morning and there's pretty minimal damage as far as we can see right now, some low spots/more trash covered areas definitely got thinned out but should still have enough plants to fill in. No guarantee we won't reseed yet but we'll be giving ours a few days with the coming heat and see how it does.

Didn't get below -1 which is a far cry from -5 mercifully. I have noticed this in the past that their low temp forecasts in the spring can be exaggerated. I wonder if it's not because of all the black ground in this part of the world that acts like a heat battery during the night?

Hopefully everyone's crop made it through, I know the canola plants growing in front of my shop that are bolting now are looking just fine! No way could you ever have a crop in the field that's almost in flower in May, but gravel in a high-traffic area nooooo problemo...

The ones in front of your shop got seeded on time! I know what you mean about a whole field; have to do what works. You guys in Manitoba have the luxury of more heat units and can wait longer to seed canola.

I've noticed that all the yield champions are located north and west of me.
