What is best the calf-catcher, the one that mounts on the side of the quad or the one that pulls behind?

SWMan. We just use a 8 foot length of pvc with a lariat strung through it.

What I described is for treating older more mobile calves that you can't get real close to, I'll see if I can find a pic of it. If you're just wanting to tag and castrate newborns and trying to be safe from mom you either have to wait til the cow has gone to eat or drink and the calf is resting, or putting an empty bale feeder over the calf with the fel, or you can buy one of these (best one I've seen that'd probably work slick).

Sometimes you have to be sneaky and stay hidden behind another cow until you’re close enough to catch the calf. This also works just fine to catch calves older than that, but the problem starts to become what the heck to do with the calf after you catch it and it’s dragging you around the pasture jumping and bellering with their mad mommas chasing close behind.

Had to dart two cows for foot rot today and first cow had stillborn twins, so they weren't too hard to catch. Hopefully things improve from here, can't see how they could get much worse. I suppose I have a cow that is without a calf and still eating, would you guys cull a 4-5 year old cow with no calf?

SWMan, I know stuff can happen with twins getting twisted up and killing each other in the womb, but anything here that has a stillborn calf goes to town.

No calf, no free rides. Cow goes here.

Same here as mentioned. No calf for whatever reason she’s going to town for dinner. 😋

Most of ours go to town if no calf but there are exceptions. We have a few pet cows that get more leniency then the others.

Thanks guys, I suppose we will let her recover and make a decision. She's a beautiful cow and had a nice calf last year, might roll the dice again on her.

They all have names, this one is Bossy-pants...ha ha
