Couple different links I come across doing my browse thru twitter...first is something for calculating costs ect of extended calving or such I belive, honestly didn't really look at it much as I guess I am probably more relaxed on that than most. Having things drag out some can be a PITA, put up with a few later ones, but any otherwise good ones get carried over and a free ride over winter, then they get to be first for the next round. Anything good always gets a second chance here, especially the quiet ones. I'll even give a good heifer another chance as well, and if it goes no where, always need one for the freezer and have others asking. I've seen more than once, one that was putting all her groceries into the calf would be open after her first calf, gave her that second chance and years later one of the top cows. Second link is about grafting orphan calves...I tend to only do it with somewhat older calves, even twins on a heifer I'll supplement for a week or more if she needs help, then only take one away if absolutely necassary. I normally have them spend a few days in maternity pen so calf gets used to their new momma, then the hobbles go on and punt them out into a corral, usually a week or two later all is good to go. Occasionally hobbles were never needed. Thats rare though lol www.beefresearch.ca/research/calving-distribution.cfmwww.grainews.ca/cattlemans-corner/tips-for-grafting-a-new-calf-to-a-new-mother/

I’m harder on cows then my dad is. If they got a bad attitude no calf or have a bad calf they are gone. Cows that have more then one calf that needs help get sucking.....they get a one way ticket on the bus. We have a pen we put our first calvers into once they valve where they get more feed and grain then our older cows. Seems to have helped get them to cycle and Into calf again.
We only Graft calves onto new cows if one happens to have twins and another loses it’s calf around the same time. And she has to want the calf. Otherwise the cow will Raise the twins and once they get old enough they seem to steal enough milk the make it.

K, need some info, you guys who got hold of ADE injectable for your newborns, I am not finding any anywhere. Talked to my vet, they tell me they have none and can't get any either. I'm not the first to ask them. Can you guys that did get some post the brand and such or even a pic of the bottle and where you got it, don't need to name your vet, but just say whether it was from a vet or name the retail store. Don't need any for a while yet, but been using the oral stuff and thats a real PITA and I want injectable again. Thanks

(780) 662-0085 Tofield vet has. Just phoned. Thanks Beer, didn't call them, didn't want to queer things just yet, as I have called a few other closer vets and all same answer, yes they have it, and no, will not sell it to a non client. How far you from Mundare anyway? I don't need it till May, be good excuse to come down for a coffee if you could maybe get your mitts on one for me. Pisses me off, I am one of the only ones left who is loyal to my old local guy, but time and time again they drop the ball its those like me who end up paying for it in the long run. When I called Westlock, they even suggested I set things up with them, I already knew they get a lot of business from up here already, girl was surprised when she found out I was still sticking it out with the local one. They're on lunch till two, gonna call local one again and see if maybe they can get one from one of these other clinics first, least I have time but I'm worried about the supply evaporating.

K, waiting to hear back from my local clinic, when I called them I explained how the conversation with Westlock ended and what was said to me...had this other woman who works there as opposed to the vet's Mrs as earlier. That got her attention, and I went on to explain that IMO the reason they said it because they know what a gong show things are here and already have a lot of the larger producers from this area as clients already. So am waiting for a call back on whether or not they can come up with a bottle or not. Pisses me off, being loyal to the only damm clinic in the area who didn't bother to order any when it was offered to them. Been kind of fuming over this all afternoon, and it has provoked me to ask this.....
How are all you fellow's vets dealing with the restrictions on availability of drugs? Are you being forced to have either a farm call or haul the animal in for a examination, or in most cases will they simply give you what is needed based on photos, vids, ect and your word as part of the producer/vet relationship?
For myself here, most often, but not always, I can get what I need based on my word, they have asked for pics in some cases to have on record, and been a few times where I have either took the animal in or had him come out, but any of those times, it was decided under the circumstances that would be best anyway. But when I am being given any drugs, including penicillin, ect, best I can get is one or possibly two doses already measured out in disposable syringes. Now anytime he is out here on a farm call, he'll leave me any bottles he opens and has more than once even offered me other ones all ready open of stuff he knows I can use. Some I pay for, some were free. But anything coming out of the clinic is an exercise in frustration. Even something like a worm pill for some of my old farm cats, his wife is oh no no, must bring it in...well its not just been cats, there has been other animals who ended up with an injection of lead instead and that in itself has always bothered me that there has been times where I had to make that call. I realize they need to make money to operate, and have never complained about any of the billing I have received, even the farm calls, very resonable IMO, only time I flipped was with my old dog, when they racked up 700 bucks in about 15 minutes and then tried guilt shaming me into a 70 buck a month of some liver pills. I drew the line there, the vet himself agreed with me, kind of ripped on this girl who had been doing it, and the vet suggested some other generic thing, think it was like 20 bucks a month or so, did that for several months, never made a diff, so we ended it, old Turbo made another year without it before finally his noodle went south one day in a never ending seizure. The old vet had always told me when it was time, he would come out no questions, but given it was a day after new years, I didn't want to bother him so did what I had to, there was nothing more to do. Guess that was more patience than a few other things got, but it has to make sense in the end, and from what I hear, I already go a lot further than many do.
But back to the drug thing, are any of you simply having to shoot cows ect because you can't get what you need without having all the I's dotted and T's crossed and jumping thru hoops?

No problem getting what we need by just stopping in at the vet. Sometimes you need to talk right with the vet and not one of the people up front at the desk. I think if we weren’t existing clients it might be a different story for getting what we want when we want without him having to see the animal. I stopped in today to pick some stuff up just in case while I was in town today

It all depends on what I am after. Typically I don't have much of a problem with large animal medications, small animals is frustrating though. I have my big male dog that needs his nuts gone, but he is a bit shy with getting all the way in the vehicle. He also does not like any sort of collar or even trying to give him a "hug". Pulls away right now, probably because he got pinned down when he tangled with a porcupine. Needless to say his son weighed in at 130 pounds when I had him cut, but I wanted something to slightly sedate the father to bring him in. Asked a few of the clinics and told them what I just said. Answer was you have to bring him in. Well f*ck, that is what I want to do but he has other plans. Absolutely frustrating. I can't even get some suggestions from the vet on how to get him in. As far as being loyal to any business, that went out the window sometime ago already. No more of hopping in the truck, going to town and picking up what you need. Now it is half an hour on the phone seeing who has what and prices. I used to be very loyal too, but I got screwed too many times already. Only exception is OK Tire, still is a good guy to deal with and wont screw me over. Anyways AB, let me know about the ADE. I would get it sooner rather than later. I can even meet you in Edmonton as I have some friends that I haven't seen in sometime. Got to see them soon before they get any dumber haha.

K, btw did get a local producer to get some ADE for me, thanks Beer for your offer. Been trying to get some info out of the Alberta Vetrinary Medical Association about the issues with my vet I mentioned, for whatever reason am being ignored. Not impressed. Even the receptionist can't figure out why emails and voicemails are simply not being responded to. Needless to say, I am not impressed, extremely unprofessional IMO. Then today this shows up in my twitter feed courtesy of ABP.... this is the actual link they posted which gives the guidlines of how the vet client relationship is supposed to work. Obviously I have an issue I need to take up with mine, they are either gonna shit or get off the pot, I am not putting up with the bullshit any longer and whether I ever darken the doorway there again is going to be detirmined on what gets said and done. www.albertaanimalhealthsource.ca/content/prescribing-and-dispensing-livestock-medications

I seem to get one of those every other year, sometimes a couple in the same year. I've had 2 that never got over it.
One I ate, the other I somehow missed and kept for a heifer, I hate that Kunt.
