I really like my webasto heaters . too cold to haul grain at minus 30celcuis. more trouble than good. It would be interesting to actually cost out what minus 30 grain hauling costs compared to normal above zero weather. Ever have rads freeze up and crack? -30 is fine it’s when it gets colder then that we seem to have a few small problems. Also at that temperature the truck and trailer stay clean and not many others haul so line ups are minimum.

I’ve had some of my most productive days trucking when it’s -30. No line ups. Just aslong as there are no brake downs

If I really need to haul in -30 i usually get a trucker in. Keep the auger in the shed at night.

-30 isn't too bad, any colder or with a wind it just plain sucks, nothing works right. Have loaded 6 trucks in the last two days, two more this afternoon, then done for a bit, and guess what, it warms up tomorrow! We try to keep our stuff equipped as best as we can, we supply some hog barns, and when they need it, they need it. Best thing we did on our old semi was put a circulating heater in it as well as the block heater, with both of those plugged in, even in -35 the temp gauge would start to move up a minute after starting it. Had a guy come for a load I think it was last year, it was about -42, was really hoping he would cancel it, nope, still wanted to do it, put a torch under the auger for a half hour and it was fine, but the hydraulics took forever to get moving. I used to work for a construction outfit and one of the owners told me, when I was a lot younger, to never try starting something if the oil won't drip off the dipstick, sounded like good advice that I still use to this day.

Some auger engines won't think of starting in temps that are quite a bit warmer then -30 , I used to have a Linamar engine which is basically when they took over Onan engines and it was not a good starting engine at all in colder weather so I had glued on one of those arctic fox heating pads as the crank case had flat surfaces to fasten one on and would cover it over with tarps as well. Such is not the case with the Kohler having a flat surface on it to put one of those but it is a better starting engine although not sure how cold a temp it will actually start in. I used to use an all season hydraulic oil in the self moving system but that was a flop, sure it was fine during the summer or cool weather but no good in the cold. I then found out that automatic transmission oil was a popular choice but I went one step further and have what used to be called J13 in the system. I realize its not a great warm weather oil as per probably not so good on the pump or bin sweep motor but its never failed though. I still have to take all the belts off the engine ( the clutch is on the auger end ) so it can crank over fast enough to fire up and let it warm up some, then shut it down and throw on the belts as those darned belts turn to a rock and takes power just to free turn the belts.
That is a great idea about having a recirc heater on the truck engine, would take two outlets to power it all but in times like that it would certainly be worth it and I bet it cranks over and starts way better too. I find even though the in block heater is doing its job, in cold temps it just isn't doing that great as so much heat is being lost and if there is a wind where the truck is outside.

If it’s windy we keep an old canvas from a header by the trucks and roll it around the front of the truck standing up. It’s only a north east or north west wind that bothers where the trucks park. It’s surprising how that will keep a lot more heat in the engine compartment and let the truck start easier.

I assume this wind was what hit the southern prairies a little while ago as per this video and perhaps its just me but I would not be hauling in that type of weather period, as they stated the next day a few grain trucks in the area flipped over from the winds. At the 11:00 mark is when they shut down and then got going the next day where its said to only be down to 25f but listen to that engine crank and crank and ... crank some more. What are other guys thoughts on what you see on the video, do a lot of farmers push to that extent. I assume there is snow in the trailer, the tarp would have been left open due to the insane wind.

It just sort of sits a bit wrong with me to see some farm youtube channels that give an impression of doing something correctly when in actual fact more a risky choice or poor practice choices, yet have big companies toss expensive equipment their way to try out to get advertising such as Case IH. Big growth/audience youtube channels must have some clout to have companies hopping to the whims of a youtube channel. I have to wonder what sort of dollars are being generated with such channels like that example and others as big or bigger, not only from youtube revenue but what may happen behind the scenes with great deals on equipment and possibly biased reviews on equipment.
Somehow I doubt DOT would be thrilled to watch grain trucks tearing back and forth with loads untarped and in a high wind to boot, I guess wheat will be growing in the ditches by next spring down there !.
The long and short of it, at what point do dollars sway what one normally would do without a camera to put flash and drama on screen to make $

My god I can't stand watching people like this that spend their day with a camera stuck to their face showing us how they do things and how dramatic everything is, just as bad as that reality TV crap. I only watched a few minutes of the video to see the wind, I'm no expert, but that was no 75+ mph wind, we have wind like that all the time around here, usually during seeding, more specifically when I'm trying to dump a bad of canola seed into the drill. You can't keep a hat on nor load a truck in 75 mph wind. If he had any brain, he would have at least crawled his lazy a$$ into the tractor and pushed the clutch in to disengage the transmission, making it crank a little better. Has he ever heard of either?
I'm not one of those people who give likes, or whatever they are after, for displaying a lack of brain activity.

Yeah that's a bit frustrating about youtube farmers and their perks, don't get me wrong I applaud them for the job the do and certainly would take advantage of the perks as well but at the end of the day we pay for their perks.
Cole the Cornstar is a neighbor of mine, heavily discounted or free Ag Leader products, skid loader to play with, new grain cart yearly at no cost, and there's much more.
I don't understand it as I'm not going to watch a youtube video and say I'm going to buy brand x because this guy uses it but it must work. His dad was telling me Ariat is one of the sponsors and when they came on board in less then a week gave him a raise due to exponential sales increases.
Sorry, back to weather.

CPT, you confirmed my thoughts on the financial aspect and typically that is why anyone goes through all that work creating youtube video's as that would take up a lot of time messing with camera's and talking when there may be work to be done and no time to be messing around but again shows where the money is to be had and perks which yes I agree everyone else pays for in the end. Because I have watched some of the Welkers video's I did catch where they were on Coles doorstep, somehow it seems collaborating brings viewers in both directions rather then competition I gather. I have watched extremely little of Coles video's, I'll kindly call it a first impression feeling and had no further interest.
Kevlar, I hate to tell you this but you wouldn't make a very good youtuber, pushing in a clutch and allowing an engine to start, tisk tisk !
So back to the topic of weather which was part of the reason I brought up that video, he mentioned later in the "show" that there had been reports of gusts up to 130 mph somewhere in Montana. Also that one of the guys filling the cars at the elevator got blown off of a car and fortunately was wearing the harness and the high winds was what caused the elevator to close which is understandable. From what I see of video's that keep popping up of random people with camera's capturing blizzard conditions just lately, there sure has been some nasty weather and road conditions from California across the states I gather ( have not been looking up any US national weather news to get the big picture ). One highway tractor after another blown around or went out of control and jackknifed on interstates.

Those you tube montana farmers blew my saying "I like to haul like a white man!"lol, But seriously its this mild for a few days and than bitterly cold that is fueling these god awful strong winds. I was also wondering watching the youtube videos last week of why one semi driver would keep driving when the trailer is lifting off the ground back and forth until its finally pulls the whole semi over. Man i would park that unit with the wind somehow pretty quickly and wait the wind out during the afternoon. What kind of idiot keeps driving like that? lucky he didnt crush a car. Maybe The MELT driver training is not helping .

I have watched extremely little of Coles video's, I'll kindly call it a first impression feeling and had no further interest. Oh believe me I fully understand what you are saying. Occasionally he puts out a really outstanding video but for the most part his videos are geared toward a different audience, scroll the comments and you'll see what I mean. I doubt I'd watch if they weren't neighbors/friends. Good people.
