Since I traded up to a larger combine the 25’ rigid head isn’t big enough. I liked the rigid auger head for oats and wheat. Usually if anything falls over it gets swathed. I don’t straight cut much more than 600 acres a year. So my question if I found a full finger flex would it suffice for the job? I really don’t want the added cost, weight, and maintenance of a draper.

I have a full finger auger head, it's a Claas Vario. There is a couple of stripper bars on there and a cavity behind the auger at the bottom for material to flow to the center. That thing has run for years now next to Macdon drapers and matched them for performance in cereals and outperformed the drapers in canola. Only thing is it's not a flex. I'm not sure what brand you run or what other brands have for design, but an auger flex isn't the worst idea going IMO. It might not be the trendy thing but might make the best sense.

I currently have a 25’ deere rigid head with a new pickup reel. People tell me it’s too small for my 9760. I really hate to let it go as we don’t have 700 acres on it since we bought it as a rebuilt. Dad figures I should just use it for the limited acres I cut. I have some severe terrain and found 25’ was trouble free and moving through gates and narrow roads easier. Maybe I should convert this to single point or am I out to lunch?

What does "too small" even mean? For only 700 acres, the 25' will work just fine and sounds like it's a great size for you. It would be cheaper to adapt it to your 9760 than to buy a new header any day.

Something I would keep in mind as well, like me, you got cattle, therefore at some point in time you will end up baling behind it...there is a reason I stick with my 18 and 21s for grain, always more gears in the tractor to boot things up if the combine can handle it, but at least its not like where this year I'm baling straw at a neighbors, and where its heavy I'm smoking the clutch on the 3020 and slip clutch on the big Hayliner because I'm trying to shove 26 feet of straw thru the baler, I simply can't drive slow enough. Now even if you only round bale, sooner or later the swath exceeds the baler. Nothing wrong with those huge tables for dedicated grain, IMO, not a very good fit in a cattle op.

I'm assuming you can adapt the header, correct? Is it just a matter of changing the single point stuff? The frame is compatible?

Haven’t found a 40’ swath yet that I can’t make a round bale on. Sometimes we have to wait for the straw to settle some before we can bale so the tractor fits over it. I was making a bale in 52 seconds this year on a 40’ oat swath. Our square baler is a different story but we cut half width For that and have a tractor with ivt to pull it. Was going .3mph in the heavy spots this year. If your only cutting 700 acres I would keep the one you have and make it work on your combine.
