Did anyone else grow some Brett Young 6214? If so, what are your thoughts?
I can't believe how much "regrowth" there is out of the original plant stem. It was swathed 3 weeks ago and now there are a lot of plants big enough that they are flowering. Wish they would have put that energy into the seed production. In fairness, I believe the 3 consecutive weeks of hot weather we had without any rain earlier this summer(during flowering and early podding) really messed up the plants. There were lots of aborted pods.
It was easy swathing, but I believe it is easier to get a good yield from bigger plants. We grew some 6076 before that did really well.

Grew L340 and 6214. Right now the L340 fields are getting flowers between the swaths and the BY6214 is not far behind. Not as bad as '21 but still a pain. The 6214 was our high yielder last year, so hopefully it surprises us again, because it's not great looking crop. 🤷♂️

I have a canola trial again this year, but it is Liberty Link only. Last year of the 8 varieties in there the BY 7204LL and Dekalb 83SC basically tied for the win. This year those are the two that I grew on my farm and the 7204 looks way better although I have not got in it with the combine yet. It would appear that the 83SC was more affected by the heavier sclerotinia pressure this year.
Grown Invigor pretty much exclusively for two decades or more so nice to have some good options. Guessing my trial comes off next week.
Isn't the re-growth simply a dry summer/wet fall sort of symptom? Seems it happens under those circumstances.

I would guess the drier summer and rain this fall have something to do with it, but the fields are not all equally yellow out here, so it must also be variety related.

...It was easy swathing, but I believe it is easier to get a good yield from bigger plants. When we did our trial last year it was 6204, 6214, and 6216. The field was 6214. 6204 and especially 6216 were much bigger and leafier than 6214 but yields in the trial were 6204:52, 6216:53, 6214:58. So the trial actually cost us 55bushels of canola (each trial was 5 acres), but education isn't free, good thing the bag of 6216 was given to us, lol. Another thing to mention is 6214 is a Dekalb bred variety that BY bought, so like most Dekalbs it looks poorer than it yields.

How wide of a yield spread do you see in these trials? Also grown Invigor since it came out, have these other companies caught up to the pod shatter rating of the Invigor? We don't really dessicate ours and the one early DeKalb straight cut variety we tried shattered pretty bad which has scared us from "off-brand" pod shatter.

We don't really dessicate ours and the one early DeKalb straight cut variety we tried shattered pretty bad which has scared us from "off-brand" pod shatter. Last year there was a 5 BPA spread from high to low yield, but there was other factors like ease of harvest/maturity/etc. The Dekalb 83SC has won or tied my trial at least twice, before that 82SC always was a bit behind the Invigors and did not have the shatter tolerance. Perhaps that is the one you tried? Looking at my trial today and the 83SC and L340PC are both not standing as good as the 7204LL, perhaps that is a plant health indication because normally they would be standing good or at least they have in previous years. I always run a full half mile and at least two passes of each. Then do a 40' full cut down the middle of the standing crop into a weigh wagon. There is a few experimental varieties in there as well, nice to see what's coming a year early. I got a bag of L140P before they released it to the public, immediately grew the whole farm to that variety the following year and probably saved 30-40BPA in a hailstorm that year! That would be the ultimate example of on-farm trials paying off. And I don't spray and pre-harvest either.

Did the field around the trial, should be interesting. I know there will be a strong preference for stand-ability!

Looks like there's definitely going to be a difference, SWMan. Had some old L233 we put in a small field - poorest yield so far. The 6214 has the nicest sample. The L340 is a disappointment - didn't live up to expectations. Here's a couple pics for you, Victory. L340 with the flowers, BY6214 without. Quarters side by side.

That same year l252 beat it by 15 bpa. I was happy with l356pc this year . Closest variety to l 252 I think . I am a bit afraid to try another company s canola variety . Tried cargill victory canola and bunge s rspeseed in the past and was always disappointed compared to the l series . The premiums were not worth it I found .

Are you sure you don't have your numbers mixed up? That's quite the difference! Now I'm really curious what actually causes the regrowth. Must be a combination of the weather and how well the plant did in the growing season. I also had a nice sample from the 6214, even though the pods looked like crap. I don't know how nice big seeds fit inside the skinny thin pods.

Brett young 6214 was our best stuff this year. The best still being below average though. Our fields have zero re growth and it was dry here this summer too. Wow that is a hell of a mess.

L356 was our highest yield canola this year. L340 was pretty close. L358 was kinda a disappointment but didn’t look good all year. It was only 1/2 mile across the highway from the field that had the high yield on L356.
