What do you guys like for round balers doing both hay and straw?
And what is a reasonable cost to trade late model balers, probably on a cost per bale basis?

Get which ever color will give you the best deal. I think they are all pretty good these days but my agco salesman runs a NH baler on his farm and says it will out bale the Massey baler. Winter seems to be when the best deals on balers happen it seems. Haven’t looked at trading lately to know where the cost per bale will be. Supposed to have a JD baler out this fall to demo in some straw.

Hey SWMan, I would get a ZR5 1200 Vermeer! Then you could do a little custom baling too! Lol I don't know enough about other balers to give you any good advice.

To me that concept never seemed like a good idea, unless you are baling all year and it's going to tie up an expensive tractor. Neighbor tells me his CNH baler is better in straw than a Vermeer, but the first hay bales I bought when I got into cattle were made by a Vermeer 605N and they were nice bales. That's why I asked in straw and/or hay. With my Kubota straw is more difficult to bale, but I gather that's not uncommon and I maybe don't have mine set perfectly. I guess wondering if any baler in particular makes a real nice straw bale.

Never not been able to bale straw with our new Holland. Sometimes it takes some moisture but have baled lots of all kinds of straw with it.

Buddy I work with bought one of those last winter. Salesman says it "will do same work as 2 standard round balers", lol. We will see in a few weeks how it measures up. He has run 2 NH balers for last few years, trading for new every 2~3 years. He didnt trust the salesman either so he also bought a standard Vermeer round baler as "backup". Last 4 NH units have been nothing but trouble for him. Ones before that worked really well.

My dad ran new holland balers from the time he quit putting up loose hay. Were the epitome of what a round baler should be. Sadly workmanship and durability went out the window with the BR series. We switched over to a brand new 568 in 2012 and I still have the thing. It has 14000 bales on it and if I spend money on it every couple years it is trouble free. The new hollands we had previously ie br7090 were a nightmare to get the net wrap to work right. Didn’t help the nh dealer is more interested in selling than troubleshooting the shit he sells. My Deere dealer is the opposite and that probably is as important or even more than quality. Only Vermeer dealer which is local is an outfit which sells panels and some other feeding equipment. Don’t think there’s a mechanic around so I wouldn’t touch anything from there.
