With the garden coming in and current freezer full we went to local appliance store to get an additional freezer. I was a little surprised to see the store half empty and NO freezers anywhere in sight. They figured none coming until 2021! Wasn't just freezers, almost everything was picked over and lots of stuff ordered but nothing coming.
Also some other stuff around town on the shopping list was not available. Made me wonder about some of the stuff that we rely on that might be in short supply. If it was farm parts, chemicals or something like that it could really be a problem. What are you guys seeing? Anything we should be stocking up on?
Seems with this shutdown there is all sorts of supply chain disruptions and we may only be starting to see this come to light.

2 weeks ago my wife bought what could have been the last freezer available in the lower 48 states.
Really I should have seen that coming. Local lockers booked through March and with slaughter disruptions and lot of market weight animals without shackle space got processed and given away or sold for personal use.
Man, 2020 has been a ride.

Yeah local butchers are booking into February of next year at this point. Might be time to learn how to butcher an animal...

We have been talking about building a "root cellar" for a few years and decided to pull the trigger this year. We are adding basically a bomb-shelter beside our basement foundation but designed for cold storage. It's not going to be cheap but with the world disintegrating in fast forward it doesn't seem crazy to have a cellar full of potatoes, carrots and canning when the grocery stores close. O_o

Talking with the owner of a brick store and he was saying it was a record year for selling freezers. Same here for butchers, I phoned in late may to book in 2 animal and got a date of January. Tried another butcher and had the chance of getting in middle of July depending on how many sikhs bring in goats. Never got a call. Makes me glad I didn't knock the old house over, it has a root cellar.

Usually plant out our garden and let the dill grow a bit out of hand, but we pick and freeze a ton for the next year, but ended up with probably like 200-250lbs of extra dill that I didn't want to go to seed, so pulled it and threw it on Kijiji just for folks to come grab what they want for pickling or whatnot.
Well, took about 15 people to come by and strip it out. Gone within the day. I'd rather it go and get used than seed into a few million dill plants for next year's garden.
I guess lumber right now is also going to be short over the next few months as supply hasn't kept up, as tons of house renos/decks/etc getting done. Read one independent retailer saw their OSB sheet pricing pretty much double over the last two months now.
Better fence off the old farm houses so they don't up and get stripped down for lumber. haha

With the price and availability of wood these days, a steel building is competitive in cost. My cousin is setting up a small building from Prairie Steel later this month. He was going to just do wood, but suddenly that's kind of expensive. If it's even possible to get the wood. Interesting times!

My lawnmower caught fire in early July. Local John Deere dealer had nothing but high end mowers. I had to settle for a different brand. He said best season he can remember for mower sales.

Talked to post frame builder today, he said wood has basically doubled in price. They are recommending guys wait until next spring. Said the supply chain is completely broken.

Personally I think a lot of the price increases have squat to do with shortages of the actual products, I think its more of an excuse for manipulation of the market place and possibly even outright greed, and also shows a lack of ingenuity of suppliers to keep stock. Look at say the price of beef in the store, higher now than pre kung flu...and what I get for them when they walk off the trailer is lower...so either Cargil or Sobeys is pocketing the difference...I just used those two names for examples.
Same with our fuel. Unfortunately, I don't think we've seen the worst yet.

Seeing a lot of stuff not available these days, or with pretty long lead-times. Talked to a manufacturer yesterday that is shipping equipment without electric motors because they needed to move and can't get right now. Rumblings of glyphosate gonna be short later in year, phosphate is short right now. I didn't take a picture in the gun shop yesterday but the shelves were bare! Did take a snap of a grocery store aisle though. Might be hard to make a tinfoil hat soon...lol If you need something for the 2021 growing season it's probably time to get it in place, this could get much worse. Supply chain is very messed up and inflation is kicking in big time.

That is one reason to be cautious and to not price too much grain out now on new crop. Question is how much increase in inflation will occur. 10% 20%? Steel for bins has shot up. Got a quote on a 25000 bushel bin ,....5500 bucks more than last year. I hate it when they say quote is good till friday, new quotes will be going up next week!

I heard from a couple people that if you know what you use for a year including parts chemicals etc to maybe look at having them on your self as shipping across the pond could get in reliable. China bought a bunch of return shipping so they pretty much got a monopoly on the shipping for a few months.
