I wondered if it is pretty normal for guys to buy equipment at the last minute or due to frustration due to a catastrophic break down. My dad bought his first john deere combine due to his frustration with his new Holland 1500 kept giving him grief. He knew he was screwed to get a deal because it was a last minute deal. He was so proud and happy to harvest the crop with a dependable combine.
How many of you guys had to do a similar stunt. In my case it was the new elmers cart. Looking back I am pretty happy to have a good product now. Sometimes I feel I try and save money by buying used only to bite the bullet when it fails and than face the fact a newer one was a better idea to begin with.
Maybe share some stories for us to read while we drink our coffee. thanks all

I'm going to look at grain dryers for next season. Mines old and under sized. And broke down right now. Easy fix if I can snag the part tomorrow.
Guess it's not last minute when I'm planning it.

Rolling a field two years ago with a very tired roller. Lots of weld on the frame from metal fatigue. Had to stop once again to weld the too light of a frame. Back in the field in bad humor I get on my phone, search on line for a good used one, made a call and bought it. Took maybe 15-20 minutes. Arrived a week later in like new condition at half the price of new. Think it's one of the best value for my dollars spent purchases.

Had a wiring harness fail in my super duty middle of harvest 2015, take to dealer and learn it will be a bit of a wait for it to be fixed. Look out the window and new loaded F350 sitting there, ended up driving it home and still have it. Last fall I smoked a deer pretty bad at start of harvest with it, ended up at a buddy's place next day and he had his black super duty in driveway for sale...I bought it. So would appear I buy black super-duty trucks under duress at harvest time...ha ha
I demoed a Claas 760 in 2014, it was so impressive I wanted to trade one of my CaseIH combines off but it was scheduled to go to another demo by Neepawa. That guy saw what it did and traded his Deere off on the spot, I never got the chance. Ended up going New Holland and later trading to a 780TT because I needed tracks in 2016, again last minute because of mud.
These are just the couple that come to mind, probably lots more if I thought about it. I would say there is plenty of thought and consideration behind these decisions, but sometimes you need to make a decision fast.

Oh yeah, forgot the best one. Watched a infomercial type display of some knives with my girlfriend(now wife) in The Bay at Polo Park mall in Winnipeg. Normally would walk right past such a thing, but they looked pretty good and I bought a set. Even today it is her favorite knives!  |

I thought Bob was a pretty good guy. When I was getting going buying equipment he was there to help finance. For a while for a short time I was all new holland until i SWITCHED TO mother deere!!!
I think most farmers make snap decisions more than any other profession. Either it being marketing products or buying products its not productive kicking tires!

We bought a grain cart a few years ago during a wet fall, not new though, and have maybe hauled half a dozen loads since. Guess it was a good purchase 🤷♂️

I don't think I ever had planned last minute purchases. I have had a lot of hmmmmm, I can use that and price is right purchases. So far I haven't been burnt as most were through online auctions site unseen. The bucket truck and freightliner are probably the most recent and both owe me nothing for the use I got out of them.

Had a really heavy hay crop 2017? Started cutting but haybine wasn't going to cut it without lotsa plugging. Bought a discbine ... and never want to see another haybine, ha.

My whole custom harvesting buisness was started on a whim. My uncle showed me an ad for a cr970 and jokingly said I should become a custom harvester. I thought about it for a couple seconds and said sure and went and bought it. I had just turned 19 at the time. Haven't regretted it yet
