I never thought I would want to be down south for any great period of time, then we did a 2 week tip in southern California. Now I think I could handle a month or 2 down there. I would go with renting as mentioned above. Allows you to move around each year and see different areas, (California, Florida, Texas panhandle , Arizona, etc.). Then pick where you like the best and maybe purchase a permanent spot. Have a few neighbors that have bought places just outside Phoenix...but they spent 4~6 months down there in the winter. Te one buddy now leaves his big Goldwing down there to tour with.

One of the guys I get together with to watch Rider games fits the model of getting away for the winter. His dads health went down hill about 5 years ago so they sold the farm in Grenfell area (good land so good dollar) plus he bought a house in Arizona during the market crash in 2008-2009 so has lots of spending money these days. Finished off a new house in Arizona (don't actually remember which town/city) so spends winter there and has house in Regina. But he typically doesn't travel outside US or Canada other than few jaunts to Mexico.
I have Chile on my list of countries to visit. The thinking there is going South from here is easier then jumping time zones heading west. Fiji was nice, there is mainland Fiji and large island 90 miles off the east coast of Fiji we spent 10 days on. I would go there again for sure. But the 2 days to fly there and time zone change is tough unless you go for a minimum of say 2 weeks. So straight south makes sense but if a guy was looking for month long durations then that changes the thinking. Haven't seen Europe yet but its not top on my list. I don't like crowded places and would rather be left alone on my own plot of land so, while there sure are some nice looking places in Europe to see, they basically are centered around urbanization/civilization. I mean you see cities, buildings, old architecture, cobblestone streets, etc. Sitting on your 20 acre property isn't what Europe is about. Unless you have a few million to spend.
Nice thing about the internet is if you want to see gals in bikinis they are available in seconds. Sitting out on the patio with a coffee with peace and quite all around like this morning is harder to do via technology.
