What type of Drones are you guys using and which models give the best pictures and fly the most distance and height. Also which ones are stable enough to land close to the take off position. Are there models where you dont need a license.
I was thinking of getting a unit for locating low spots for ditching. Also nice to see a areal view of crop growth to make a decision if a fungicide treatment pays for itself.
Lots of models to choose from but wanted to know from the guys that already have one and get there true advise on them.
Thanks.

My son Patrick has one, pretty sure it's a DJI phantom 3. He has a few drone videos on YouTube. It's got quite the range.

I have a DJI Phantom 3 pro but I don’t think they make them anymore. You can still buy used ones. I would check the rules. I believe if it’s below a certain weight you don’t need a license. To legally fly The Phantom 3 you need a license. I think the new ones that DJI sells is the Mavick.

Essentially in both the US and Canada, anything over 250 grams requires some kind of licensing or registration. And maximum altitude is 400 feet agl regardless, and not within a certain distance of any airport. In Canada, the rules are slightly more onerous. You must get a type of pilot's license. So basically there's no legal way for most of us to fly a DJI phantom without shelling out some money and spending time to study for an exam. I'm actually probably going to do it, though, because I think it could be interesting, although the requirement galls me.
In the US you have to register your aircraft, and in the future they will require a transponder of some kind, based on bluetooth or wifi (how will that help anyone?).
It's all ridiculous really. Guess I've been listening to YouTube's xjet for too many years. It's not at all about safety. It's not about privacy. There are already plenty of laws that can be used for those issues. Registration and licensing is definitely not going to increase public safety. Idiots will still fly them without bothering with such things. I've been flying model aircraft, fixed-wing, for many years without this sort rubbish. I suspect one of the major reasons for this sort of regulation is not public safety (there are plenty of existing laws regarding safety"), but rather an expensive aerial photography industry that's now under threat by amateurs with low-cost model toys. I see drone footage in shows and movie productions all the time now. I'm pretty sure the aerial photography companies are working hard to kill off all radio-controlled video and photography platforms. After all if you're taking pictures of your farm each year, several times a year, you could print your own pictures and put them on your wall! The humanity.

Looks like DJI makes a small quad copter called a Mavic Mini, that is under 250g, so free and clear to fly. But range is limited and it probably cannot fly in much wind.
So maybe good has come of these stupid attempts to regulate the hobby out of existence. Companies have really innovated to make incredible little toy machines.

I’ve just gotten a DJI mavic mini 3 pro. It was approximately $1500 Canadian, Already 200 miles on it, it will fly around 15 miles with the better battery and give back a great signal from 5 miles maybe a little further, it can fly 1500 feet high and about 32 mph, it’s picture is very stable in winds up to 30 mph but obviously it’s a little risky flying above 20 mph winds, it’s also below 250 grams, I do have 2 P4s but are getting a little worn out, it’s amazing how handy the drones are for checking cows.

Are there any that don't need a cell phone to operate?

Are there any that don't need a cell phone to operate? the mavic i have can come with a video screen and I don’t think you need a phone but I’ll bet it needs internet so you can register it and after it’s registered you should not need internet again.

This has inspired me to get the thing in the air. So far I'm failing but gaining. Think I finally got to a working app but now it's updating.

We're grounded yet. Bad motor on one of the wings. Just about ready to go air born and it won't turn.

Take the props off and arm it the way you normally would in manual mode and give it full throttle. See if it does anything, could be a bad ESC or bad connection. I can't really help much with DJI stuff.
