Hey guys. Just wondering what everyone is dessicating Canola with by now. We've only been growing liberty so we've been using glyphosate but it seems like ripe Canola hardly takes it in. Also I've seen some test strip with gly and heat and it wasn't a noticeable difference in dry down time. Any tips?

Almost all the canola that I dessicate is heat and RU. On that note I do very little dessication of canola. I don't recall ever desicaiting RU canola. Most is still swathed here so probably not the best help.

I know of one farm that does their canola with reglone. 4-5 days later it’s ready to combine.

I should price out reglone. I think it's expensive but might be worth it if we can combine more of it before the early snow we've had the last 2 years!

The seeds wouldn’t have much green in them. They did some the middle of October last year and it seemed to work ok.

Okay this is a big deal to leave canola long enough before swathing or desiccating. Don't under any circumstances do either before the seeds are firm to roll in your fingers and 100% seed color change. The only reason I would consider doing otherwise would be if it was really close and put it in a swath to save it from a mild frost situation. Too much yield difference for leaving it IMO, you've come that far so why give up yield potential to swath/spray a few days early??? Reglone works faster, save money by buying generic and make sure to use lots of surfactant. Roundup works but slower if not RR canola, Heat is expensive. If using Reglone be aware the plant can get fragile and have heard of plants getting brittle, need to be able to get it harvested sooner than later after it dries down. Type of combine honestly has a big impact on this decision. Rotary combines struggle with green straw, my Claas absolutely loves it. Been straight cutting everything for three years and have not desiccated one acre of any crop. It's a huge saving and the combine works better in canola if there isn't a ton of dry straw breaking up onto the sieves. Chopper gets a workout though!

I've sometimes wondered why bother dessicating when I seems like it's not doing anything! Running new Holland rotary and we've had a hard time keeping the sample clean. We aren't running out of power ever except on plenty of dew so maybe we'd have better luck with greener straw.

New Holland rotary is capable of doing it, I straight cut a bunch with CR9090's before I had a Claas and it worked okay.
