Hey guys , like the subject says how many farms are in this class and what smart ideas for winding down operations or also how much equipment investment is necessary. I am likely a last generation farmer with two daughters who s interest will be in other careers so I dont find myself running a rat race to be the biggest farm on the block. I find myself really enjoying running my sole proprietorship business. What are some of the smartest and least tax burden ideas you have experienced or are planning for retirement. I Would have found it exciting to have a son to farm with and I often tell my neighbours with sons to enjoy there time together. I had real good memories helping dad on the farm when I was young.
Contrary to what experts say I actually think family farms or sole proprietorships may make a come back some day, as I see some corporate farms struggling with labour requirements or the incredible losses that can pile up. Problem is equipment will have to shift back to smaller sizes but it might anyways with automated tractors, sprayers and combines not to far away. Also people seem to care more now where there food comes from and a smaller farmer has the time to develop a relationship with the consumer. Also recently, a lot of foreigners are s coming over from china and india to start farming.
What do you folks think

Yeah never know what they will decide, or maybe they marry a wanna-be farmer. Your not off the hook yet! I will say that although I enjoyed operating equipment I had planned to do something else other than farming in high school, and it wasn't until I was 19-20 that I really decided that farming was the best option. I've read that a young person's reasoning ability is not fully developed until age 25 or something like that, so basically that's why we have parents.

Getting to be more females in farming all the time. Know a couple guys here that were getting excited about retiring and selling the farm, only to have their daughters start to farm! lol Like SWMan stated, most people don't know what they really want to do until their mid 20's. At my 10 year school reunion, there were only 2 people who had followed their chosen career paths out of the entire class, me and one guy who wanted to be a HD mechanic. All the rest had gone to university right out of high school and wasted the first 2-3 years of school because they pulled a 180 and chose something completely different. My kids are still young, my wife was saying she wanted them to go to university right out of school, I have convinced her to get them to wait a few years and get some life experience first, a lot changes the first couple years out of high school. My daughter wants to be a vet right now, my son a paleontologist, has wanted to be since he was 2, in fact could say that word before he could say his sisters 4 letter name! I expext their choices to change several times before choosing one.
