I want to buy a 35 to 40 foot header for my deere S680. I have owned the 635 flex auger header for my other Deere combine and wondered, is almost double the money for a Mcdon or John Deere flex draper worth the extra cost. It seems the trend is going toward drapers. In my opinion they look like more maintenance and heavier but, how much capacity will a draper add to the combine vs the auger. All I need the header for is for soybeans as I swath oats and canola. Seems like too much to invest in a limited capacity.
Is THE FLEX DRAPER WORTH the extra cost ?

Probably not worth the cost for your situation. If you run into short beans the Macdon will save you beans otherwise you're right about weight and increased maintenence costs. We feel we need the Macdons because of edible beans and how low and short they can be.
A few years ago we were running two Deere heads side by side in soybeans. One draper, one auger. We did loss counts behind them and there was no statistical difference between the two.

In cereals you will see a difference because of smoother feeding and because the heads are mostly going in first allowing for better threshing. An auger is more prone to uneven feeding, especially under damp conditions.

True, but he's swathing his cereals. So definitely the auger header is the way to go in this case.

Demoed a few drapers in recent years and I've never been blown away by their performance. I love my old 630F, so simple.
Fall of 2019 when it was wet and icy the fellows with drapers had a lot of issues getting their beans. We could just giver, no problem.

A well adjusted full-finger auger head should work just fine, and you have a true flex header for soybeans if you are comparing to the Macdon flexdraper.
