Saw on the interweb last night about this. Insane! Why are there so many mice, what predators are missing that made the population explode?

Well, we have plenty of birds, foxes, snakes and lizards. One thing we don't have are harsh winters. Maybe that's the difference?

I remember my kids bringing home a book about mice, I can't find the same thing, but this gives you an idea.
Not sure how many mice are in Canada, but I can put the cat outside and with in minutes it will have a mouse. Maybe we have better cats in Canada?

That does sound like plague-levels of mice infestations. I'm sure there are millions of mice that live in our fields but they don't seem to bother us much and keep the coyotes healthy. We don't allow any coyote hunting on our land because there really the only thing that keeps the gopher population in check around here.
Mice are in my garage, and seem to get into most of the the vehicles eventually. My neighbor says farm houses just have mice in them, but we've managed to keep all our houses free of mice for many years. I hope to clean out the garage and then fix up the doors to seal (they don't seal at all right now), and cover any and all holes in the wood and gaps next to the foundation. If you can eliminate any place they get in on the outside of the house and then spend quality time sealing up holes on the inside around the foundation, you can keep them out usually, at least if you're not fighting a plague invasion. I've tried repellents but none of them work. Have to seal any hole, no matter how tiny.
Already a few signs of mice in the new shop, but hopefully this summer we can finish installing door seals and caulk up any gaps in the foundation, we can keep them out.

I hate mice and we could never control them here until we got cats. A few good cats are the solution to the mouse problem in your yard.

I agree with cats but I think the Aussie situation is past cats.

Yeah when the ground looks like it is moving with mice, cats wont do much. They would end up like Garfield ,fat in no time!

We have cats around our sheds and they do a great job. We also pay attention to eliminating potential breeding areas by keep the place tidy, grass short and things up off the ground. We bait a bit when there's obvious signs of mice. We have never had a mouse in the house, because we have the place well sealed. Luckily, the worst of the mouse plague is not near us...in fact numbers are well under control here. When the ground is moving the cats run for cover. LOL! They're not that brave! Quite frustrating when you go to load a truck and find that mice have nested in the auger engine air filter!

I was waiting the idiot animal rights activists for their opinion!. How do you propose birth control on wild animals?? Catch and release?? That's a good one. Someone should catch a truckload of mice and deliver them to PETA headquarters or members homes!

In the comments its mentioned cats are not a real option I guess, but this is beyond comprehension, caterpillars or grasshoppers thick enough to cover teh ground, yes, but mice...wow.
