Stole this thread from the other site , but wanted to get more thoughts on this topic. What have you guys found that worked the best for hose quality and tips on applying hose. I use the black flex hose from John Deere on my 1895 disc drill and find especially with Oats I am replacing new hose every two years. To be true to my image, I have found duct tape to work quite well to get thru a partial season when a hole develops. How in the world can 3m duct tape survive the constant flow of oats while the plastic coil tube wears thru in a flash.
I may not be the most handsome farmer, but I always like to keep a roll of duct tape around because it makes me feel handy!

I cut strips of tin, the stuff that comes with a bin that's between the stacks of wall sheets, and put it on where it's wearing through, then duct tape it good. The hose usually only wears in the same places. I have done this and got many more years out of a hose, usually the rest of the hose becomes brittle and breaks before it wears out again. I have even done this with the hose to the shanks to finish up for the season with good results.

I cut a piece of old hose abut 10”-12” long. rip it in half to get two pieces. Use it to patch the hose then duct tap it. I’m talking about the 4” hoses.

We use the kanaflex hose. The cheaper stuff only lasts part of a season and isn’t nearly as easy to work with. The longer hoses when they wear out get used for shorter runs. We also try to turn the hoses that wear out lots half way through the season.
We make a patch with old hose then duct tape it on. If I get ambitious one spring I’m going to get some pipe bent to try and save some hoses. Or make some longer hoses into two piece ones so we are only changing a short piece that wears out on bends

We use hose from the case dealer dont know if it's better or worse, tie sections of tire tube over holes. One of the biggest helps so far was we added more support brackets between tank and hitch so the hose stays flatter and just improving routing in general. The rear fold case drills only have one spot per side where the hose really needs to have slack to fold so that helps too

X2 for kanaflex. Lasts longer than cheaper stuff we have found, worth the extra money. Should turn hoses 1/2 to double life on bends in theory. That near impossible so used an lot of copper coat last install. Will try turning them end of this season or a rain day.

This is what I do as well, always there is a few spots with a bend where it wears way sooner than most of the hose. Honestly it all wears out about the same for me. I've had that expensive stuff BG has used for years wear out in one season, it is easier to rotate though. I just get the greenline stuff at local farm supply store, probably a third of the price. I find letting it age for a couple years hardens it a bit and it lasts better. So my plan is to buy extra rolls every time I do it now.

Maybe hose was better quality a few years ago. In ten seasons we've only found a hole in one hose that was not caused by external abrasion (a bolt sticking up or rubbing against another hose) or weathering. Knock on wood I guess. Replaced all the hoses from the cart to the drill tongue this spring as part of a rebuild. I guess we'll see how long they last.

We have bought the expensive BG stuff, and the cheap stuff. Nothing lasts on our BG drill and tank. 2000ac per drill into the season and we were taping and putting the cut hose over top. Always there the bends are of course like everyone said already. Previous drills the hose would weather from the sun before it ever wore out.

We started to use the higher grade hoses on our 1895 and they last 3 years with no problem. And we also use Urea and send all our fert through the drill in spring. They also have a UV Blocker. Since then we never had a cracked hose and my machine is parked outside. If the next drill would not be from JD, i probably still will keep using them.

I use a pieces of used hose also to patch holes mid season. Cut pieces about 1-2 feet long and make a slit on one side then pry it open and slip them on, Helps to take about an inch strip out of where you slit making it easier to slip on. Saves on duct take for when you really need it! Big factor on hose life is air velocity on. Flexicoil used to recommend 6" seed and fert lift with secondary hoses at frame level. That would have to be on a finely tuned drill with all hoses just so and no sag. Pretty hard on bigger drills. They soon raised that to a foot.

Anyone have a good replacement for the white secondary Bourgault hose? I believe it's 1.25" O.D. I took the cultivator out this spring and they just shattered one after another, probably 5 year old machine although it does sit outside. Need to replace them for fall banding.
