Sold my first calf at 11. Started building my cow herd when I was 14 but I wouldn't say I was a bona-fide farmer until I was 18. And from the looks of it I'm the same age as Carlos, ha. Stayed strictly cows until my Dad sold me the farm when I was 31, that was in '97. He helped for a couple years and then I was on my own. The cattle portion (80% of the farm) really dragged me down during the drought of '01-03 followed by BSE so I started putting more emphasis into the grain side - best decision I ever made. Have a son that has been a part of the farm for the last 12 years or so. Hopefully he can make a go of it when I want to scale back and take it easy.

Think I started on Fordson tractors when I was about 10, then onto Case 1010 combine about 11-12. After school I got my ticket as a mechanic ...... think they’re called “technicians” these days! 🤷🏻♂️ Tractors & combines ....... ended up specialising on combines. First block of dirt in partnership in 1978. Family partnership until ‘95. Own harvesting business with my wife in ‘96 ...... bought another few blocks for specialist seed production in the last 10 years ....... still harvesting with Case ...... but they’re a bit bigger & a f...n lot more expensive. Still love the harvesting bit though.
