Got an email Friday that P&H is buying new crop October delivery oats for $4.
I'm not a big fan of pre-selling in a short market but I'm thinking that it might be profitable to grow oats in 2021...ha ha

I am itching to giver on oats this year! I have my first 100 bushels an acres locked up at 3.95 with a act of god clause to boot! started selling at over 4 for overage. The way i see it if dryness sets in and our crop sucks , it wont matter what the price is, if you dont have any to sell. It is nice to see some optimism in the Ag industry again. The other reason swman i am aggressive in sales is because i expanded and bought 640 acres of land this past fall. Need to make sure those payments are covered.
I really think call and put options have a place in this market. Unlike most guys, I am not as confident this bull run will last till our beans are harvested. I have contracted a lot of 13 dollar a bushel canola with put options attached. In December till January they were costing 46 cents a bushel. I checked last week and they have jump to 81 cents a bushel at the money for a November futures put option. Timing is everything and it seems you got to get them bought before to much risk gets built in.
Viterra has a future tracker that averages the price for a set period of time at your choice. I tried that too on some canola. I ll save some production for july pricing. July and August will be pretty interesting months a head. Where I farm a couple of rains after seeding is all we need for a 50 bushel crop of canola in the valley.
Crop inputs will catch up fast to dampen our profits.

So my oats need sprayed but the temperature is beginning to soar. What can I spray and not hurt the oats too bad? What part of Buctril M hurts the oats - bromoxynil or MCPA? Wondering if I did my own tank mix if I could lower the more hard hitting ingredient. I do need to get out volunteer canola which isn't on the MCPA label. What about dicamba in oats?

How hot are we talking? Watch dicamba and esters in the heat. I can look more when I get home.

We spray enforcer M on our oats. Have never injured them. Enforcer M doesn’t have oats on the label but everything in it is registered for oats.

I will wait till latter next week and hope the temps drop below 25 or 26 c. I am also adding in half rate pivot to buctril M because I heard in Kansas they are seeing leaf diseases and apparently they have a decent crop. All these southern winds are a vector for rust transfer. If your oats are not too weedy just have patience and wait for cooler conditions. Not worth a setback now. Oh I also spray after 4pm for crop safety. I have done it in the morning if daytime temps are 22-24c.

We are conditioned to wet and humid weather here in Manitoba but that is NOT the pattern we're in right now.

If it stays dry like it is so far some generic fungicide is all I would do. Tough to scrap it altogether, but this might not be the crop to throw the full package at either. I'm seeing reduced stands in the early cereals and the hills are brutal in some fields. Definitely not what we are used to seeing at this time of year.
