That is interesting as I had both been told it wouldn't work and then a neighbour tried it by attempting to suck fuel out of his highway tractor with a fillrite and claimed it wouldn't do anything. So I have to wonder if there are differences between vane pumps or what the deal is as I haven't had a vane pump to try it myself. Did you have to run it forward initially to fill the hose then stop, reverse the leads and start it up running backwards ?
Speaking of sucking fuel out of tanks and I have no idea what sort of setup was being used but this fall a local farmer was doing NH3 and had his tractor full of fuel when he quit for the night and comes to it the next day I presume and its totally empty which means I expect about 300 gallons sucked out. That takes some time and a lot of fuel capacity so if a pickup with a huge tank or multiple tanks or some larger truck and if a gas pump was used instead for quick extraction. Another neighbour about two years ago had fuel sucked out of his tractor and combine late in the fall and and again no idea who or what they were using to do it.

Fuel was disappearing out of machines, yard and portable tanks a few years back around here, no one got caught but more than one pickup was spotted in the middle of the night with tidy tanks on board. At my brothers shop in town customers trucks often get sucked out while parked in his yard and he isn't the only place it happens at. Fuel is as good as cash really, back when it was an issue locally with the machinery, local drug dealer was also running a bulk fuel service, wasn't hard to put two and two together who it was doing it...
As for pumping backwards, seems some don't realize you can't suck backwards thru an automatic nozzle. I have automatic on one pump but manual on the other which is on a trailer mounted tank, so use it for such. As NF said you can remove the nozzle then you are good to go. I have a length of plastic hose I slide and jam on the nozzle as a snout to reach down, works good as long as you are wanting to go in a straight line. Jackknife under the lever and you're good to go. On a high lift, having the hose full of fuel def helps the pump pick it up and get things going.

I expect this fuel disappearing act happens all over no doubt but its not something I really hear much talk about other then locally, just not a topic that comes up other then on a forum like this where its easy to exchange information. I suppose a person would have to set up a multi camera system which is hidden and put the "bait" truck out there easy to access as in your bothers case and catch the bastards in the act, possibly a trigger system to alert and get the police pouncing on them right on the spot ( if there are police close by ). Never the less with enough and clear video that shows a license plate and vehicle clearly and perhaps even video of the guys face with cameras hidden on the truck being pumped, there would be enough evidence to charge I would think or surely shame that person to never show his face around again.
For sure the auto nozzle is a dead issue when it comes to reversing flow and for all I know someone tried that and then claimed it was the pump that couldn't reverse flow. I had an issue where I sucked a piece of aluminum off the bottom of a truck tank that was probably in there from the factory and it sheered the gear sheer bar in the pump so after that I rigged up a hose with an inline filter to avoid putting any tank contamination through my pump as after all that screen in the pump becomes on the wrong side of the flow doing this reversing trick. Just have to remember to spin the cap off the jockey tank so the pump isn't pushing against that valve and after all the jockey tank is filling and have to keep a watchful eye of that. Its all good though as long as one is sticking your hose in your own equipment and not someone else's !

Just took nozzle off stuffed the hose in the tank. Reverse power connections and turn it on. I didn’t time it.

I forgot about that one, you are absolutely correct, back pressure really slows them down

You guys really like sticking your hoses where they don't belong, Lol.

You guys really like sticking your hoses where they don't belong, Lol. Oh no not "us guys", its those creepers at night who go sticking their hose where it doesn't belong ( you reminded me of those travelling salesman/farmer jokes with the farmers daughter in the midst of the receiving end LOL )
