Kevlar, as I recall when I realized something was wrong, my initial reaction was to back off the throttle, and yes it got worse fast. Luckily I did have enough expereince to know I had to slow down properly to keep control. And yes I believe the only way I could get that shimmy controlable was to at first crack the throttle back open. My memories of what and how I did it are vague, the ones of shitting myself aren't. Enough said there lol. Had I not had the limited expereince and knowledge to control it that I had, I would have ended up dumping that thing at about 90MPH.
Reminds me of one time in the patch, was in the dispatch office collecting my paperwork for a load, the other fellows I was running with were already in there, I'm looking at where we were going, somewhere back in MacLeod River area at Whitecourt, and I told them I would lead in and they would follow. This happened often and while many other drivers didn't like it, part of my job even as a leased truck was to kind of babysit the other guys and since I had more experience than most of them put together, it made sense. Was this new young fellow, and I had told him I wanted him first in line behind me so I could make sure he was chained up proper and waited his turn ect. Then someone made some comment bitching about me always going in first, I replied it was so I didn't need to worry about someone like him coming back down in front of me. The new guys eyes got big and he looks at me and asks, "what happens if you do spin out?" Still flipping thru my papers without even looking at him my reply was simply, "well if you can't hold it, you get real good at backing up in a hurry". I can still remember old Bill English who owned Raydan, absolutely pissing himself laughing on the other side of the counter along with the rest of the office staff. As I recall, was actually a good day and the job went well lol.

Speed wobble you have to speed up to get rid of it.
I had a ski doo formula Z 700. Going across the the lake had the speedo up to 185kmh. And I had my helmet trying to suck off if I got above the windshield. That was a fast sled. Beat lots of 800s in a race.

There seem to be a variety of reasons why a motorcycle can get into that death wobble situation as I have been reading this morning and also watching some videos. Tire pressure was one topic that came up and carrying too low a pressure created too large of a contact patch on the steer tire, even worn bushings in the swing arm. While some said speed up others who have had more experience with this said ease off the throttle, not to cut the throttle suddenly but ease back and also lean forward to transfer weight which this video also demonstrates. Although this old video sort of talks about uneven loading it was said that packing weight too far back on a bike or more weight in one saddle bag then the other can induce it. Anyway its interesting to watch this old video as they sure didn't have any problem inducing it on these bikes.

WOW that video is a classic!!!! Reminds me of the kind of videos we used to get back in school!! lol Got to say, those guys have a lot more balls than I do to ride during a wobble like that. It makes me wonder, would a bike with no front suspension do it as bad or at all? They said the front forks were going independent of each other.

That was half the reason I posted it as the vintage aspect was amusing. I wonder if somewhat weak forks were playing into it and am sure suspension tuning, tire construction and pressure, chassis stiffness, front/rear balance, the shape of the fairing and so on all would create a good or bad bike for having weird handling characteristics. I could be all wrong on this as after all sport bikes don't have the caster angle that a cruiser or chopper have and don't turn well because of it but have assumed a chopper style fork setup would have better straight line stability. I don't know if that means one is more wobble prone then the other though, guess I'll have to ask a group of Hells Angels in a dark alley as they are making a dope deal this question !. Now if sport bikes had real issues like that there wouldn't be any racers left alive so its a good question.
Its said that loose steering head bearings can bring it on as well and thats something on a heavier bike you might not even realize is getting loose, actually any bike for that matter but its way easier to feel for on a dirt bike, none of that lasts forever as that bearing gets pounded as its not going anywhere but sits there in the same spot on the straights taking the hits from rough roads or trails.

Took the wifes sled out the other day to make sure it still worked ok. LOL or just to play in the bit of powder we have. Had mine out as well trying to get the weight transfer set up better so it handles better. Added a 240/270/290 flash to it, have the clutching down, but it is a bit light on the ski's now. Thing is an animal.

Touring car master's. (Classic car racing) On board Vince Macri's 350 chev powered '69 Camaro SS race car at an iconic Australian mountain race track. Love the sound of the Chev. Have you been around the circuit big talk? Gee there’s a lot of Ford Cortinas hiding in people’s sheds.............

I've been around the track on a few occasions but just for a stickybeak. It's an interesting track and somewhat steeper in reality that it looks on camera especially down through the dipper. There sure are some big dollar collectible's racing in that video and I sure wouldn't like to be paying the insurance premium's on them.
Like you said, lot's of Mark 1 Lotus Cortina's
Plus Mazda RX2 Ford Falcon XY GT/GTHO HG/HK/HT Monaro's Mini Cooper s Jaguar Charger 1971/72 Ford Capri GT (V6) XU1 Torana's Mustang's

A guy I worked with had a Mountain Max and we rode together quite a bit. It was quite the machine with the triple pipes added. Rode with another guy in the mountains for a weekend who ran a triple piped Mountain Max and he had that one really dialed in. Fun to watch guys on those machines back a dozen years ago. Stupidly crisp response, pick the skis up at will and dance the sled around.
Warm and some rain here so sleds still sitting. The topic of graphics came up so here is the one I did. It's a 2012 base model rmk so they are really plain. White panels and black hood with basically one decal. I am not that fussy about appearance, my sleds get enough time on their side, upside down or going through shrubs to not worry too much. But I finally decided to personalize the one sled a few years ago. Easy enough to do. Didn't do the full tunnel wrap, but you can order most kits as a hood or as a full wrap. The wife's sled in background is a stock 2015 Assault and I really like the way that one looks as is.

Why doesn't my farm trucks run like this? Have you seen what he has under the hood of the “farm truck”? I bet there is more money in the motor then all of our farm trucks combined.

Never underestimate an old pickup lol, few made that mistake years back, my '75 F150 with a 460 and 3:50 gears made some pretty high end shit look pathetic.
My friends and I never had the bucks to pour into our pickups, all mid to early 70s Fords, but we made the best of what we had. Probably one of the most memorable times we got pulled over by the RCMP was one nite headed south of Devon on hyway 60 about a mile south of Leduc #1. Be about 2AM. Anyone familiar with the road, obviously predates the four lane, well that gentle uphill grade heading south was a great place to fine tune things. Freddy was behind the wheel of his '72 F250, another good bud in the swamp seat, the hood was in the box, and when the cops heading north met us we were doing about 70 mph and I was sitting on the left hand skirt bent over the engine with a homemade wrench in one hand and the distributor in the other...that sucker still had points too lol. Was a different day and time, cops blew a shitty in the middle of the hyway and run us down, not sure who was laughing more, them or us. We got told to put the hood back on and go home. Memories...

We used to do similar AB, but it's funny to think that many family cars on the road these days would trounce those old modified '70's V8's straight out of the box. Hard to beat a big block off the line tho. My wife has a Subaru WRX Sti 2.5 litre, that's been thru a performance workshop. It's chipped, has an aftermarket turbo and full race exhaust system. Didn't go stupid, but it's putting out 280kw (375h.p.) which, in a relatively light, AWD car, means it'll scare ya! It wouldn't stand a chance against that farm truck tho! Anyone know what it's putting out? Have to be 1500 plus h.p.
