I normally don't even pay that much attention to these music threads because it seems like for the most part I like different stuff than most you guys lol, maybe thats age too, guess that was why back in the day we used to have a good selection of stations on the old AM dial lol, but now for like what I considered "good music" the radio is mostly silent as the stations are long gone, much the same as the music and those who made it. I have always liked fairly diverse selection really, country and light rock/easy listening, but more the older music, it was different, had real meaning and heart, it told a story. I used to bounce around the dial at different times of the day so one got some of everything at times, I miss that really, same in the house and shop, hell used to have a radio playing for the cattle most of the winter but stopped doing that years ago when the dial went quiet one after another...
Guess what triggered this post is I was thinking of this song today and thought I'd post it here, as for me it sums up much of how it feels for me, its a bygone era and I can't think of a better song that explains that...

I agree AB, today's country music just isn't country music, would be closer to pop. My brother and I were actually talking about this today. Very little of the classic country played anymore. Seems all the radio stations have their playlist and that's all they play, they used to commit a segment each day or so to country music, but not anymore, every radio station sounds the same. I like variety, a mix of new and old. There is no oldies stations anymore. When a guy listens to the radio for hours a day every day, it get gets very boring hearing the same song several times a day. I find myself now seldom with the radio on. I'm only 42 but appreciate the legends. There used to be a native run station here in Manitoba that had a mix of everything, one song would be AC/DC, followed by a Jig, then a local band sometimes, was a great station, but it's no longer on the air I think, can't find it anymore.

Well Ab, nothing saying you can't post what you like. I am sure there are others that will appreciate it. Personally I like lots of different music and all have their place depending on what my mood is. I always try to listen to everything that is posted when I get a chance. I used to have a good friend who was into the real old country music, 40s and 50s era. Sitting around bs'ing a few times listening to his music and it's "I know yhis song". Remade or loosely based on old country songs. It was pretty neat to hear where some of the newer music has come or evolved from. Same goes for blues, so much music has its roots in blues.

On the AM dial 600 cjww out of saskatoon plays a decent mix of older and newer country music. I can’t stand most of the new country all sounds the same to me. I find I turn the radio off and listen to silence more and more. I don’t mind the odd talk show but not enough talk too many commercials for me.

I started listening to more country in the late 80s, by late 90s most of my new Cd's were country of that period. Granted, I don't think some would consider some of that "country" either (no offense to AB or others, just making a point). But the last few years is far from country by my era of definition too. It's why I started listening to talk radio alot, became like my dad in that way. But that got very politicized and now with covid I turned that off too. So very much living in the past with digging up music. I don't know if Johnny Cash, Kenny Rogers, Crystal Gale met the definition of country either when I think of 8 tracks sliding around on the dash. Things keep changing.
Suzy Bogus is one I like to listen to yet. An example of someone not really country compared to 10 years previous but compared to today she is. Smooth voice, some acoustic guitar, and a piano so still play this cd. Aces is a good song from it too.

A couple months ago my parents (now in their 80s) were moving and they asked if I wanted some of the old vinyl. This record was one of them and for anyone that appreciates music, you might enjoy his smooth rich voice.

That George Jones video and Eric Church video sums things up well. I like a number of newer country names like Church, Justin Moore, Brad Paisley so I can listen to some new country. But that is no where near country music that Eric is playing at the country music awards. Why does country need to reinvent itself so it has zero connection to its roots. I understand pop music should be changing. And today's country is basically pop music from past decades so that hasn't changed. No one has reinvented jazz, blues, classical, opera, hard Rock and perhaps alternative hasn't changed much. But for some reason people have decided country needs to not be "country" anymore. And its not the general public deciding this since stations follow programmed play lists therefore you are dictated as to what is popular. No one really knows how many want some country roots in their country music.
As for rock. It's changed from Elvis, Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis. So some degree of reinventing. But 40 years later I can say rock is still rock. Not so for country. Sammy Hagar Standing Hampton was a great record I had back in the day. Still rocks 40 years later.
I can go from Sammy Hagar to Sam and Dave in the same post but I doubt one can go ftom Merle Haggard to Thomas Rhett (probably why I don't care for Rhett).

Interesting point about the "New Country" music as I tend to see it as pretending to be country but ends up being more like country rock sort of as they try to flash it up to be modern and catchy to the young crowd is my guess.
